2007 Ohio Arts Presenters Network Conference

October 21-23 ::: Midland Theater, Newark, Ohio

Bill, Brian, Ed, and Gary have come together as The Muleskinner Band, bringing their individual musical backgrounds, experiences, and influences with them.  An evening with the Muleskinners will certainly lead one to the conclusion that none are willing to abandon their musical heritages. Hence, the musical offerings on a given evening will span Big Mon to Buck, Patsy to Merle, Gospel to the Drifters, Doobie Brothers to Crosby, Stills, & Nash.  Great vocal harmony is a centerpiece of every Muleskinner rendering, as is solid instrumental backing and soloing.  An evening with the Muleskinners will certainly include frequent and prolific storytelling, humor, and good-hearted dialogue with the audience.

The generation of the old Blues legends is passing away one by one, and the young newcomers are still searching for their own directions. But Teeny Tucker has already found her way. It's no wonder. Being the daughter of Tommy Tucker who achieved worldwide fame with "Hi Heel Sneakers," Teeny comes by her talent naturally.

Teeny enchants every audience with her powerful three octave contralto/mezzo-soprano voice and her repertoire of spicy Rhythm & Blues, hot melting Soul, expressive ballads and ardent Gospel songs.

I consider her one of the outstanding up-and-coming female blues artists on the scene today, and I'm expecting great things of her in the future. - Bruce Iglauer-Alligator Records

Not simply a powerful voice. Teeny Tucker is a wonderful singer who knows when to shout and when to whisper. First Class Woman is a first class blues album. - D.C. Blues News

She knows how to work the crowd-good and hard, and to it's pleasure...she's blessed with that stingy golden goose creation-genuine star quality. - Columbus Monthly Magazine

The Randys are a 5-piece band from Columbus Ohio. Since 1998 they’ve been establishing a unique sound using a mixture of styles from the 1940s to the present.

Everything old is new again with the Randys. They cover artists such as Tennessee Ernie Ford, Louis Prima, Elvis Presley, Joe Tex, Dean Martin, Perez Prado, Mills Brothers, Lawrence Welk, The Beatles and more. Their state side influences can be described as Americana, while their imported “world music”, includes Cuban, French, Latin & Italian selections.

The bands’ musical focus is on upbeat, danceable, melodic songs that all ages can enjoy but might not recognize. Often introducing listeners to music that has otherwise been forgotten, their eclectic tastes define the band.

Whether it’s a pulp surf sounding guitar, tropical lap steel, soothing accordion, or a peppy piano accompanying five crooning voices with fabulous vocal harmonies, the Randys are devoted to getting the toes tapping and the feet shuffling.

Silver & Spruce

Listen to the MP3 Demo

There are no other words for this group except CLASSY & BEAUTIFUL.

Silver & Spruce, a sparkling duo of guitar & flute, offers a variety of music that ranges from classical to the Beatles. Latin, Spanish, Folk, Pop, French, and contemporary ballads, this duo can do it all. Pleasing personalities put the icing on this cake and make Silver & Spruce a good fit for a concert series, wedding ceremony music or quiet romantic dinner music. Guitarist Sean Ferguson joins with Rodolfo Vázquez, former first chair flutist with the Mexico City Orchestra to make this a most compelling musical choice.

Rodolfo Vázquez, flutist, is former professor of flute at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes and principal flute with the Orquesta Filarmónica del Conservatorio Nacional de Música both in México City and the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Guanajuato in Guanajuato, México. He has been touring as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles in the U.S., México, England and Switzerland. Rodolfo is music director of Vázquez & Ferguson (Silver & Spruce) and El Cálido Viento. He has been awarded three times by the Ohio Arts Council and three times by the Greater Columbus Arts Council for CD recordings of Latin American, classical, original music and for chamber music recitals in Franklin County. He has studied with the world renowned Irish flutist James Galway who wrote of Rodolfo: "Your music is charming and beautifully played."

Since their humble Rust Belt beginnings in 2003, The Spikedrivers have captivated show-goers throughout the United States with their ferocious brand of red-hot Yankee country boom. The outfit has a genuine stage appeal and has continually delivered the "can't miss" show experience not readily available in the dusty clubs spanning from New York to Chicago. Having completed several successful tours throughout the Midwest and East Coast, the demand for this bunch is becoming quite high.

In 2006, the band released of their debut studio album, The Spikedrivers, which was produced by Grammy award winner Jeff Ciampa. The album features the band's most popular down-and-dirty originals, melding an industrial soundscape with old-time country, swingin' blues, and good ole rock 'n' roll.

The band is based around talented singer-songwriter Jesse Henry but this is no one-man show. Fiddler Megan Palmer adds sublime colour to the songs no matter what style the band tackles whilst guitarists Paul Brown and Steve Sweney prove adept in adding southern-fried flavour. Without a doubt, the considerable individual talent of each artist alone is enough to draw a thirsty crowd. But put them together, and you have such cohesive showmanship that audiences everywhere are left begging for more.

Hiuchi Taiko

In Japan, Taiko is both an instrument with a long history and a young art form. Used for meditation, communication, and celebration since the fourth century A.D. it moved to the stage and became a performing art in the 1950’s. It is this dynamic Kumi daiko – group drumming - that draws upon the taiko and its place in the iconography of the Imperial Court, Buddhist ritual, Shinto derived festivals, and traditional village life.

In 1995 Eric "the FISH" Paton began to present taiko at festivals and in schools through the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Artists-In-Schools Program. Paton has presented over one thousand performances and workshops in the last ten years. He has appeared as a guest with Burlington Taiko, performed with Yas Hakoshima Mime Theater, Sachiyo Ito, and Eitetsu Hayashi. In addition to his own compositions, Paton performs literature from the Japanese kumi daiko tradition, including those of Mr. Eitetsu Hayashi.

In 2006, Paton formed Hiuchi Taiko (Hee-oo-chi tie-co) to include fellow Eitetsu Hayashi residency students from Davis Middle School and Capital University. Inspired by the taiko experience in Eitetsu Hayashi Fuun No Kai’s "Train the Trainer" program and their two-year residency in Ohio, Paton began composing new taiko works with his twin brother, Stuart Paton.

Embracing both the music of Brazil and the great American songbook, Maggie Green’s live shows are creating a buzz. Highlights include sold out shows in Rio de Janeiro and a television appearance in the hometown of beloved singer Elis Regina.

Studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Maggie filled her time listening to recordings of the jazz greats and began developing a style all her own. It was also during this time that Maggie started absorbing the music of Brazil, especially the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. The exploration of this music has become an integral aspect of Maggie’s work.

Maggie is one of the most promising new musicians in the region… an accomplished singer and great live performer.
-Ray Hanley, Greater Columbus Arts Council President
