Tropical Night
is a three-man band that plays Island music in the Columbus, Ohio scene.
Tropical
Night’s repertoire includes styles
such as Soca, Reggae, Calypso, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and Pop music. They
perform the popular music of Harry Belafonte, Bob Marley, Antonio Carlos
Jobim, The Police, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and real Trinidadian classics
of composers such as Lord Kitchener. While crafty in their improvisational,
reflective, Jazz-oriented side, they are also capable of setting a dance
floor into action with their rich, island grooves. Steel drummer, (or pan man), Ted Royalty learned to play pan as a member of the California State University, Long Beach Steel Drum Orchestra. He is also a veteran of Trinidad’s annual steel drum band competition, Panorama, having played in the band, Starlift, in 2000. In addition to Tropical Night, he is in the band, Apocalypso, plays vibraphone with the Midnight Locomotive Quartet, freelances with other great Columbus bands and performs solo. Ted first met bass player, Scott Gold, through playing together at the famed and now defunct Kahiki Restaurant. Scott Gold, bass player, arranger, and composer has performed with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Jimmy Buffet in his 25 year career. He has recorded for movies, television and national radio commercials. He is also currently a member of Yumbambe, a local Salsa band and Minan Dya, local Brazilian band. Shane Willis, drumset player and island groove master is a busy and well-known Columbus musician. Shane is also a member of Yumbambe and with other Latin, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Jazz groups. He has also played with internationally known steel drummer, Othello Molineaux. Tropical Night performs with other fine musicians on vocals, guitar and saxophone when a bigger band is desired.
