 A Harp at your Event

This information about the harp may assist you in making a decision about music for your event. With so many choices available to you, I am glad you are considering having harp music. Since the moment I first saw and heard a live harpist, I have loved the beautiful sound and appearance of the instrument. Most people aren’t very familiar with the harp, so I would like you give you a bit more information that might further help your decision process.

- The harp has a gentle, lovely sound quality, but a relatively soft voice. Except for the smallest of parties (less than 20 guests) I use an amplifier. This assures that the harp music is loud enough to be heard, while allowing me to play it gently, and not ruin the tone by playing aggressively. I own several different amps and a large sound system and can easily cover a large hall with several hundred dinner guests.

- Concert-sized pedal harps weigh between 70– 80 pounds. Although I use a special dolly to transport the harp, certain situations such as choir lofts and lots of stairs must be avoided. A few steps are no problem.

- Harps are expensive! My harps cost $20,000 each! Strings are also expensive. This is why hiring a harpist costs more than most other instrumentalists. Yes, I also drive a big car. <smile>

- Concert harps are hand-built from Canadian maple and Sitka or Engleman spruce. The chromatic mechanism in the 7 pedals and the neck has over 1,500 moving parts that must move with the precision of a clock. Accordingly, the harp is sensitive to extremes in heat and humidity. Maintaining the tuning of the harp is very difficult in direct sun and in humid conditions.

- With the harp’s sensitivities in mind, I always arrive at any engagement 45-60 minutes early to allow the harp to acclimate to the environment before tuning and playing. This is peace of mind for the client/bride as well; you know I won’t be walking in 10 minutes before it’s time to play.

The beauty and elegance of Pegi’s unique style makes any event extra special!

About Weddings…….

Pegi has over 20 years experience helping brides plan their wedding music! Planning music for your wedding can be fun… and simple with Pegi’s expert assistance. Your ceremony can (and should) reflect your personal taste and wishes. Whether you plan to have 10 guests or 300, the harps lends a very special touch and atmosphere.

Let’s look at the ceremony itself. Catholic wedding masses and Jewish weddings will differ somewhat from this general outline, but this should give you an idea of what is involved in planning wedding ceremony music.

Prelude – 30 minutes prior to ceremony

Usually a mix of different classical styles; special pieces of couple’s choice.

Seating of Mothers / Lighting of Family Candles

Popular choices: Canon in D, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, or a piece meaningful to the Mothers.

Attendant’s and Bridal Processional

Bride should have her "own" music; music changes after all attendants reach altar. Many brides love the traditional "Bridal Chorus", but there are several other pieces that also work very nicely as a processional. It’s all about what you want, and the mood you want to set.

Unity Candle

The couple uses the two family candles lit previously by the mothers to light the center Unity Candle. Usually a short classical piece is played, or a piece meaningful to the couple. Sometimes the couple will take flowers to their families at this time, also.

Recessional

The Wedding March, Ode to Joy, Trumpet Voluntary are all popular choices...upbeat classical pieces are best here.

Postlude

The upbeat, classical mood continues as the guests are released by ushers or the bride and groom.

You will get personal attention to the musical details of your big day!
